UP Scorecard developers ran a stakeholder survey through summer 2025 and the results are in! Survey respondents came from all major stakeholder groups, the largest from the reuse sector. Interest in expanding Scorecard coverage to China and increasing granularity in the US and Europe. There is near unanimous support for PDF print outs of results; development is underway!
Extended plastic treaty talks in Geneva, Switzerland conclude without a global agreement. The proposed text would not have fulfilled the mandate to end plastic pollution considering the independent scientific evidence. SUM’D Executive Board and Steering Committee members involved with the UP Scorecard were on the ground.
UP Scorecard stakeholders are well established in Europe and North America, but it can be useful to track regulatory actions in other regions. In a new commentary in Nature Medicine, researchers from the Food Packaging Forum, INSERM, New York University and ETH Zurich describe how the underappreciated health impacts of food packaging may be linked to the known health impacts of ultra-processed foods and how the UP Scorecard can be used to help guide decision making towards a healthier food supply
In 2024, food service organizations and not-for-profits participated in internal training activities introducing them to the Understanding Packaging (UP) Scorecard. These presentations provided important science-backed information about the impact of foodware and food packaging on environmental and physical health. Through these capacity-building activities, stakeholders learned how to use the UP Scorecard to support more sustainable foodware and food packaging decisions.
